Bone Woman, Ancestors. Mixed media. 40" x 30" "Bone Woman" honors the woman of Poland's past, the area of today's Ukraine, whose bones were removed from her grave after death and decomposition, ceremonially painted, and then returned in anatomical order. She was honored, possibly, as an important tribal figure. My ancestor who walks behind me.
Five Bowls. Mixed media. 36" x 24" "Five Bowls" holds the gifts of women who gardened, tended bees, prepared meals, birthed, and led ceremony in secrecy as the Holy Roman Empire swept across Europe, forbidding local ways, and exterminating those they called "witches."
Refugees, Ancestors. Mixed media. 30" x 40" "Refugees" leave and arrive, still today, hand in hand. Ancestors who continue to walk behins and before and with me as I unfold my power and take my place.
Thee and Me, Ancestors. 40" x 30" "Thee and Me" a portrait. My "Ancestors" series hone my past as a woman of Polish and Slovenian descent. Drawn to discovering the rituals and ceremonies of my ancestors, I found deep healing and understanding through my study and research. Each canvas beings in ritual being touched by Fire, Earth from where I stand, Breath, and WAter from Magdalen's cave in France. It is through this ritual images arise and take their place.
